In 2011, there were five vacant lots at the corner of Wabash Avenue and East 29th Street in Kansas City, Missouri, that residents considered an eyesore. The intersection in the city’s Key Coalition neighborhood had faded in the last few decades as residents with money left. But thanks to Dre Taylor, a local social entrepreneur, those lots were transformed into a thriving urban farm by 2016.
Legal Aid is the proud recipient of a generous $160,116 grant from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City (HCF) to fund our Mental Healthcare Access Project. Legal Aid and HCF are partnering to help clients experiencing mental illness secure public benefits by supporting a full-time attorney who provides representation, brief legal advice, and counsel. Washington University School of Law In St. Louis, Missouri, participates in the Internet Revenue Service - Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC). The clinic provides representation for qualifying clients with active controversies with the IRS. Basically, the Washington University Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic can assist with anything other than the preparation and filing of a tax return. We are also charged with providing education on the rights and responsibilities of taxpayers.
On Veterans Day, we honor those who honored our country with their service and sacrifice. They have earned our enduring respect and gratitude, and, when they need it, they should get help obtaining the benefits and assistance they are entitled to and so richly deserve.
